The Agency published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to consider revising the Environmental Radiation Protection Standards for Nuclear Power Operations (40 CFR part 190) in Feb 2014. The Agency plans to consult with SAB Radiation Advisory Committee on technical issues related to dose in 40 CFR 190.10(a). The issues to be discussed would involve the update of the 25/75/25 organ specific dose standard to an effective dose standard using EPA’s most recent radiation risk estimates as well as the most recent tissue and organ weighting factors and biokinetic models being developed to support the latest recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) as presented in Publication No. 103. The SAB will be asked to provide advice on the conceptual approach for developing the data needed to update the dose standard.
