BACKGROUND
The SAB will consider information regarding conclusions about shipboard treatment efficacy in the SAB report, Efficacy of Ballast Water Treatment Systems: a Report by the Science Advisory Board (EPA-SAB-11-009) to determine whether a technical correction to the report is warranted.

In 2010, EPA's Office of Water requested the SAB to review technical documents and available data on the efficacy of ballast water treatment systems and to provide advice on improving the performance of such systems. The SAB Ecological Processes and Effects Committee augmented with additional experts (also referred to as the Ballast Water Advisory Panel) was convened to conduct the review and develop recommendations through the chartered SAB. The SAB report, Efficacy of Ballast Water Treatment Systems: A report by the Science Advisory Board (EPA-SAB-11-009) was provided to the EPA Administrator in July 2011. In 2015, several members of the former SAB panel raised concerns with whether conclusions regarding shipboard ballast water treatment efficacy in the SAB report were supported by the data available to the panel.

The SAB will review the underlying data on shipboard ballast water treatment efficacy in the SAB report, Efficacy of Ballast Water Treatment Systems: a Report by the Science Advisory Board (EPA-SAB-11-009). The SAB is not seeking new data regarding ballast water treatment system efficacy and will focus its inquiry on analysis of the data used for the report and the conclusions drawn in the report.
