General Motors Corp 780 James P. Casey Rd., Bristol, CT. The Facility manufactured automotive wheel spindles and bearings from 1968 to 1995. Although a participant in EPA's Voluntary Corrective Action Program, the Facility is currently conducting site cleanup activities almost exclusively under the State's Property Transfer Act. Based on the available information, EPA determined in December of 1999 that the Facility had achieved EPA's Environmental Indicators.

Current Status

As of September 2005: General Motors is currently operating a GW pump and treat interceptor trench for a former Chromium Plating Area where releases of chromium to soils and bedrock occurred. The system has reached asymptotic steady state with hexavalent chromium concentrations still exceeding the State of Connecticut's Remediation Standards Regulations (RSR), Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, 22a-133k-1 et seq. The facility has submitted a permit to CTDEP to inject food-grade molasses over an approximate 13 month period to increase the removal efficiency of the system.

General Motors decommissioned the facility in 1995 and sold the property to a real estate partnership which leases the facility building to a variety of tenants (e.g., Firestone) for light manufacturing, and warehousing and distribution operations. General Motors anticipates recording an Environmental Land Use Restiction (ELUR) for the site per 22a-133q-1 of the RSRs.

The facility was farmland prior to 1968 and some land surrounding the facility is still farmland, although much of the land is currently being developed for housing.
