MONDAY: EPA Administrator Visits Miriam’s Kitchen, Announces Wasted Food Initiative
Food Steward’s Pledge engages faith communities on a major environmental, social, economic issue

Washington – On Monday, January 18, U.S. Environmental Protection Administrator Gina McCarthy will join Miriam’s Kitchen and Western Presbyterian Church to announce the release of EPA’s new Food Steward’s initiative. The campaign invites faith and community groups to sign a Food Steward’s Pledge, and gives them a practical toolkit so they can help reduce wasted food in their homes, congregation and community.

While at Miriam’s Kitchen, Administrator McCarthy will honor Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service by serving breakfast to the public. She will then help Executive Chef Ciji Wagner cook a roasted pumpkin salad made with “gleaned” food – ingredients saved from the landfill to become part of a nutritious, delicious dinner for those in need.

The initiative is part of a broader agency effort to meet the new U.S. Food Loss and Waste Goal: reduce wasted food 50 percent by 2030.
