Project Title & Description
Youth Soil and Wetland Restoration Project
Seattle Tilth, GroundUp Organics, and the City of Seattle's Office of Parks and Recreation are partnering to combine youth employment training with education on environmental justice issues in Southeast Seattle, one of Seattle's poorest and most diverse neighborhoods. The Youth Soil and Wetland Restoration Project will address environmental health issues that plague the neighborhood, such as pesticide exposure, pollutants, and water quality issues, through youth development and educational programs that empower residents to reduce their exposure to the environmental health hazards facing their communities. Every quarter, ten low-income and underserved youth ages 14-19 will be engaged in 144 hours of employment skills and environmental justice training. Educational activities will take place two afternoons per week and six hours on Saturday. Concrete projects will include organic food production and community garden builds, wetland restoration, and composting, as well as community outreach.
