Air, Awareness and Action: Sustainable Practices for Emission Reduction
This grant is to provide assistance to the Southwest Environmental Education Exchange for training, education, demonstration and monitoring tools for the reduction of air pollution, solid waste and water use by public schools in border sister cities. The Border Sister Cities under consideration are Brownsville-Matamoros, Laredo-Nuevo Laredo, Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras, and Del Rio-Ciudad Acuņa, all of which are located within 100 kilometers from the border. The project will help improve the environmental performance of public schools in the region through compliance, pollution prevention and promotion of environmental stewardship. The proposed project also addresses the priority area of Texas-Coahuila-Nuevo Leon-Tamaulipas, specifically for the area of air by “encouraging the reduction of pollution, including reducing fossil fuel combustion, through energy efficiency and/or renewable energy projects;” and the area of environmental education/community based projects through the design, implementation and evaluation of “an environmental education program that addresses the work groups priority areas described therein such as water, air, waste, environmental health, emergency response and preparedness, and cooperative enforcement and compliance assistance”.
