Project Title & Description
Environmental Justice Small Grants Program
Atchafalaya Basinkeeper (ABK) will develop a Stewardship Program for the Atchafalaya Basin and will conduct a large scale outreach campaign, targeting all of the communities with major populations that use the Basin for commercial fishing, sport fishing and other forms of recreation. Through one on one meetings, presentations and training's, the project will address the following environmental problems in the Atchafalaya Basin: illegal cypress logging, wetland loss, oil industry pollution, unauthorized wetland development, dredging and the dumping of litter into wetlands and waterways. Presentations will cover ecology, environmental services and the worldwide importance of South Louisiana's wetlands. Ultimate goal is to engender an enhanced sense of pride and stewardship in the commercial fishing community with regard to the Atchafalaya Basin and to develop a network of people who use the Basin and are trained to identify and report activities that are potentially damaging to its environmental health, thereby augumenting ABK's efforts to protect and restore the Basin's wetlands and waterways.
