Project Title & Description
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROGRAM - FARMWORKER SAFETY, PHASE II
This award provides full EPA funding in the amount of $19,998 to support
a Farmworker Safety Initiative survey to show that most farmworkers in the San Lius Obisbo area were receiving pesticide safety training as required by federal and state pesticide law; however, the farmworkers did not understand the material that was presented. In response to the Farmwork Safety Initiative results, Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo proposes a 12 month long project to address the lack of understanding by farmworkers of pesticide safety trainings. The Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo and the San Luis Obispo County Agriculture Department will hold 6 focus groups with farmworkers, crew leaders/supervisors and growers. The goal of the training assessment is to examine pesticide safety training programs and to determine appropriate and effective training networks within the farmworker community, in order for workers to obtain, understand and retain pesticide safety training information. Information will be provided to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, University of California Cooperative Extension and other training providers to reduce health risks through increased knowledge and understanding by the farmworker population.
