Healthy Indoor Environments
The proposed project will target Greater Austin area school districts and seek to reduce the burden of asthma on local communities by improving asthma management skills of students, parents, school staff, and other community members, while improving indoor air quality in schools and increasing asthma awareness throughout schools and communities. Expected results from hospitalization, and the number of reported asthma attacks in children related to uncontrolled asthma. These projected outcomes will be measured to assess the effectiveness of the intervention. A discussion of chosen evaluation methods will be provided in Sections 2 and 5. This initiative includes 3 major components, all of which fall within Program Priority 1: Indoor Environmental Asthma Triggers - Education and Exposure Reduction and Program Priority 4; Healthy School Environments. The targets of the following components include environmental health.
Component I: Conduct asthma needs assessment
Component II: Employ an asthma outreach and education campaign
A. Open Airways for Schools for asthmatic children
B. Exercise and Asthma for Physical Education staff and coaches
C. Asthma 101 for parents, school staff, community members, and young adult learners
Component III: Implement EPA Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools program
The goals and objectives will be addressed by the asthma outreach project and achieved through the work plan that follows in the next section.
