Project Title & Description
STIMULUS - National Diesel Northeast Produce Refrigeration Unit Electrification
This assistance agreement provides funding to the Chelsea Collaborative under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009. This project will repower privately-owned stationary cold storage trailers at the New England Produce Market, the second-largest produce market in the U.S. 79 Tier 0 trailer refrigeration units (TRUs) burning off-road diesel 24 hours/day will be scrapped and 79 new electric-only TRUs, supplied by new conduit, will be deployed in their place. About 484,000 gallons of diesel fuel, 398,000 lbs of nitrogen oxides, 61,000 lbs of particulate matter, and 215,000 lbs of hydrocarbons will be saved each year, benefitting the surrounding densely-populated environmental justice area, facility workers, and ambient air quality in this ozone nonattainment area. An estimated 20 manufacturing, design and installation jobs will be supported by this project.
