Project Title & Description
Asylum Hill Recycles
Through its "Asylum Hill Recycles" project, Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice will motivate small business owners and landlords to increase their recycling rates by explaining how the practice reduces their trash removal costs. Many of the neighborhoods multi-family housing fail to recycle citing cost as a deterrent. Hartford is home to the nations fifth largest trash to energy incinerator. Hartford residents, in fact, suffer a 20% asthma rate, more than twice the national average. Asylum Hill, a neighborhood located near the center of Hartford, contributes to the incinerator problem because of its low recycling rates. CCEJ will work educate 100% of the public school students from grades four to eight on recycling. Train five neighborhood residents to educate 200 neighborhood residents on the knowledge and skills of recycling. CCEJ will work with small business owners to begin new efforts to recycle as required by the law and show them the cost savings of recycling.
