Project Title & Description
Environmental Education - Bug Book: A guide to benthic macro-invertebrate
The goal of the project is to develop and distribute a supplemental benthic macro-invertebrate identification manual for volunteer water quality monitors. To do so, FODC science staff will work with volunteers from the Deer Creek Water Quality Monitoring Program involved in identifying aquatic insects over the last four years. Using the lessons learned from this program, the knowledge of two entomology experts, and a state-approved technical advisory committee, FODC will complete an easy-to-use publication to assist citizens with the classification of biological data collected in their watersheds. The outcome will be a cost-effective, supplemental method for identifying benthic macro-invertebrates in the Sierra Nevada to provide viable data to state and federal water regulatory agencies. The manual will include "lessons learned" from FODC and will be used for training other watershed groups through its distribution, workshops, and training days. This agreement provides full EPA funding in the amount of $10,000. Pre-award costs are approved back to 9/01/05.
