Project Title & Description
Clean Diesel Assistance Program - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) 2009
The Railroad Research Foundation is requesting funding to repower locomotives for the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The locomotives proposed for repowering were originally built in 1985 and 1986 and are equipped with 16 cylinder turbocharged engines rated at 3,500 HP. They were once used in line haul service, but have been downgraded to switcher and local pickup and delivery service. While the locomotives are subject to EPA emissions regulations, none have been rebuilt and consequently have uncontrolled emissions. The repower kit includes a Tier 2 turbocharged 8 cylinder engine rated at 2,000 HP, which is adequate for the intended service.
