Project Title & Description
Teaching Rivers in an Urban Environment - Blue River
Teaching Rivers in an Urban Environment Blue River the (TRUE Blue) project will begin with a one-day summit to be held at the Swope Park Interpretive Center which overlooks the Blue River in Kansas City, Missouri. Middle and high school science or environmental education teachers from Kansas and Missouri schools within the Blue River Watershed will be recruited to spend a day learning about watersheds and how water flows on the land. They will learn about the geographic features of the Blue River Watershed including elevation changes and its major tributaries. Watershed maps showing impervious surface amounts will be examined and stormwater run-off and flooding problems and issues will be discussed. Kinds of pollutants, their sources, and their impacts on water quality will be identified. Teachers will develop a four day TRUE Blue curriculum and plan a field trip to test water quality for students.
