Project Title & Description
Food Quality Protection Act (AG INIT)-Integrated Farming Systems for Romaine Lettuce
This project will investigate the potential use of “harvestable hedgerows", such as herbs and cut flowers to promote sustainable practices in romaine lettuce on Californias Central Coast. The goal is to reduce the use of high risk pesticides by providing habitat for beneficial insects that control the primary lettuce pests. These “harvestable” hedgerows will be planted in the romaine lettuce fields and will evaluate the economic benefit to offset their management. If successful, both organic and conventional lettuce growers could employ this practice greatly reducing the use of high risk pesticides. This award includes federal funding in the amount of $100,000.
