Coatings for Steel-Reinforced Infrastructure
Electrochemical corrosion of rebar in steel-reinforced concrete is an important factor in infrastructure decay and maintenance costs. One method of delaying corrosion is to use epoxy-coated rebar (ECR). However, chips or cracks in the epoxy coating, which can be easily introduced during handling or at the work site, significantly reduce its effectiveness. The student team proposes to address this by developing a self-healing rebar coating. This project will investigate and compare three self-healing mechanisms.
