IMPROVEMENT OF WATER QUALITY ON DESPLAINES RIVER
The Lake County Stormwater Management Commission has six projects that will improve water quality on the Des Plaines River; 1) Ryerson Woods Hydrological Ecological Restoration Project this project will implement restoration strategies that will restore natural hydrology and historic vegetation; 2) In-Stream BMPs and Native Vegetation Installation in Bull Creek Watershed this project includes restoration of 5 acres of remnant mesic forest, streamside plantings, and creation of 5 riffle-pool sequences in Bull Creek; 3) Lagoon/Peninsula Restoration 950 feet of shoreline will be stabilized and restored with native riparian zone plantings; 4) Valley Lake Water Quality Improvement and Shoreline Restoration this project will remove a concrete drainage ditch and replace it with a vegetated swale that will flow into a “Rain Garden” of wetland plants protecting the shoreline from further bank erosion; 5) Aptakisic Creek Restoration this project will stabilize eroding streambanks of the Aptakisic Creek reducing the amount of roadway runoff pollutants and soil entering the stream and enhance aquatic habitat and 6) Low Impact Design (LID) for New Lake County Permit Facility this project will provide resources toward the design and implementation of LID practices to manage stormwater to the new county permitting facility.
