Project Title & Description
2006 Implementation of Narragansett Bay CCMP-RINHS
As directed under Section 320 of the Clean Water Act, this project under the National Estuary Program implements recommendations of the Narragansett Bay National Estuary Program (NBEP) Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the estuary through tasks outlined in the annual workplans of the NBEP and its partners. Activities include synthesizing, analyzing, and interpreting Bay ecosystem data; communicating timely, meaningful information on the condition of the Bay and its associated watersheds, including habitats, water quality, and institutional efforts; serving as regional leader for establishing a watershed-based framework that reflects key management issues that can be addressed and acted on in both RI and Massachusetts; conducting key restoration and protection activities that secure broad public and stakeholder support; and administering the NBEP for efficient, responsive and accountable program and committee management.
In this action, the NBEP is implementing projects with its partner the Rhode Island Natural History Survey (RINHS) to: 1) educate the public, stakeholders and policy-makers about Narragansett Bay's ecology and management needs; 2) promote stewardship, citizen involvement, and science-based management of natural resources; 3) facilitate communication and coordination among stakeholders, project partners, and policy-makers; and 4) highlight CCMP implementation activities and accomplishments.
