Management of Sediment-Attached Indicator Bacteria Near Shellfish Beds
The Oakland Bay, WA fecal coliform Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) technical report identified bacteria on intertidal sediment as a signicant secondary source of nonpoint pollution, threatening shellfish harvests. As the primary implementation measure, the control of all sources of suspended sediment was recommended. There is however, very little research to support the efficacy of this measure. This project will determine if this strategy will be effective at limiting bacteria loads. The outcome will be an addendum to the implementation strategy, ensuring a higher likelihood of success at protecting vulnerable shellfish beds, as well as an improved TMDL for Oakland Bay. The results can be applied to at least six other shellfish growing areas in Puget Sound.
