National Benefits of Achieving the 1977, 1983 and 1985 Water Quality Goals

This study projected national benefits from the imposition of the water pollution abatement guidelines determined by the Environmental Protection Agency in pursuance of the Federal Water Pollution Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). Benefits derived were annual benefits from meeting the cumulative pollution abatement standards for 1977, 1983, and 1985. Water quality related benefits were examined for eleven water use categories as follows: 1) Recreation, 2) Aesthetic, 3) Ecological, 4) Health, 5) Municipal, 6) Industrial, 7) Agricultural, 8) Domestic, 9) Commercial Fishing, 10) Navigation, and 11) Property Values. Potential direct benefits from meeting the 1977, 1983, and 1985 pollution abatement standards were identified for each category. These annual benefits by category were also aggregated to obtain study totals for each of the primary years - 1977, 1983, and 1985.
