The Association between Air Pollution and Morbidity Using NHIS Data

Data from the 1976 National Health Interview Survey were examined for associations between measured outdoor air pollution levels and health and medical care utilization variables. There data are for individuals and have the advantage of characterizing such important individual exposures as smoking habits and occupation. Data from the central cities of 70 SMSAs were investigated. More than a dozen dependent variables were examined using a standardized (with necessary variation) specification. All relationships were with with ordinary least squares regression techniques. With the exception of bed days and physician visits, the estimated coefficients of the air pollution variables appears to be random numbers, with with respect to sign and magnitude. A number of explanations are possible for the lack of significant associations.
