Human Health Risk Assessment for Superfund

This paper, prepared for the NYU School of Law Conference on Superfund Reauthorization, December 3-4, 1993, analyzes the human health risk assessments conducted a 78 Superfund sites which had Records of Decision signed in 1991 or 1992. The authors focus on the distribution of these risks across different categories of analysis in risk assessments.Question explored include the distribution of risks at these sites by scenario timeframe of exposure (e.g. current use or potential future uses), location of exposure (e.g., on-site or off-site), population type (e.ge., resident, worker, residential, traspasser), and exposure medium (e.g., soil, groundwater), and exposure route(e.g., ingestion, dermal contact, inhalation). The paper focuses on detailing the types of cancer and noncancer risk data used by regional EPA officials to reach the remedy selections contained in the Records of Decisions.
