The Use of Jury Awards to Value Health Risks: A Preliminary Assessment

The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of using an alternative source of information on the value of changes in states of health. Specifically, this paper focuses on the use of jury awards data for non-fatal injuries to estimate the value of reduced morbidity. The ultimate goal of all these efforts is to provide more accurate estimates of the economic benefits of pollution control programs designed to reduce excess risk of illness and death from environmental pollutants.
