Valuing Risks: New Information on the Willingness to Pay for Changes in Fatal Risks

This report updates the Violette and Chestnut (1983) report which assembled and reviewed estimates of the willingness to pay for changes in fatal risks. In this report, results of the different studies are compared by reference to the estimated "value of life." This is not meant to be thought of as an amount of money that an individual would accept in exchange for his or her life. Instead, it is a way of comparing valuations for small changes in small risks that affect a large number of people.
