Pre-Test Issues for the Valuation of Natural Ecosystem Effects Caused by Acid Deposition

The objective of this study was to review and evaluate the relevant economic theory and assumptions associated with obtaining individual preference data for environmental commodities. From the review of the literature a number of issues and survey questions were developed that could be pre-tested with a focus group prior to the performance of a national survey. The purpose of the questions was to determine the economic benefits associated with the protection of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems with the Airondeck Mountains of New York State. The report focuses on issues in contingent valuation survey techniques, although contingent ranking and contingent bidding studies were also evaluated.
