EPA proposes listing the Grain Handling Facility at Freeman, in Spokane County, Washington, to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) to protect human health.

The soil beneath the Grain Handling Facility property is contaminated with carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. This contamination has moved into the groundwater, affecting the well that serves 900 students, teachers and workers in the in the Freeman School District.

A water treatment system is being used in the short term to remove carbon tetrachloride and chloroform from the school water supply until the soil and ground water are cleaned up. The Washington Department of Ecology will be the lead agency for the investigation and cleanup.

Additional cleanup information from the Washington Department of Ecology website.
