Envirite is a former hazardous waste treatment facility located in Thomaston, Connecticut. The facility treated metal-bearing wastes and deposited residues in an approximately 5 acre on-site monofill comprised of five (5) discrete "cells". Currently, the facility is proceeding under a RCRA 3008(h) Consent Order with EPA towards a final remedy decision. Based on information collected as a result of a comprehensive site investigation, EPA determined in August/September of 2001 that the Facility had achieved EPA's Environmental Indicators. The facility regularly monitors groundwater as part of its post-closure obligations associated with one of the monofill cells that was closed as a RCRA unit.

Current Status

The facility completed its RCRA Closure for the former treatment building and equipment and submitted a final 2-vol. Closure report in June of 2007. In addition, the former facility treatment building was demolished in February 2008. The demolition will help achieve compliance with the State of Connecticut's Remediation Standard Regulations (RSR), Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, 22a-133k-1 et seq. and in particular, RSR Volitilization Criteria, 22a-133k-3(c). Photos of the demolition are provided below.

Currently, the facility is developing Media Protection Criteria (MPC) (cleanup criteria which will incorporate the RSRs) for the site as part of a remaining component to complete the RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI). The facility has been monitoring groundwater to develop RSR-compliant MPC. The facility has also begun development of a Corrective Measures Study (CMS) required under its Consent Order. The CMS is a remediation plan (or proposal) for the site. It is anticipated that the CMS will contemplate remediation of oily waste deposits in soils near / under the main gate area and a long-term management approach for the monofills. The oily waste deposits, termed "Pre-Envirite Waste Materials (PEWM)", were deposited on the site prior to Envirite's presence at the site.
