Platte River
Summary: Size and location: Originating in the mountains of Colorado and Wyoming, the Platte River watershed drains two-thirds of the state of Nebraska. Ground water is an important part of this ecosystem. Nature of EPA involvement: EPA has served as a catalyst and facilitator for the Platte Watershed Program. EPA has devoted staff to program coordination, assessments, and outreach for this area, Region VII's major large-scale watershed approach project and a priority "place" under the Great Plains Program. Funding from various sources has been focused on investigation and implementation activities in the Platte watershed. The Middle Platte wetlands watershed is also a national case study site for conducting watershed-scale, multiple-stressor ecological risk assessments and a national pilot area for wetlands biocriteria development.
