Description:The Environmental Study Team, an organization of local high school students who meet regularly to learn about and address environmental issues, has been conducting a stream study for the past six months on the Indian Kill located by the Schenectady County Conservation Councial and Trout Unlimited to determine the feasibility of introducing a sustained population of Brown Trout into the Kill. EST prepared for this project by attending workshops on chemical testing and macro-invertebrate collection, as well as learning the physical layout of the Kill by studying maps and completing a stream walk. Testing sites were selected, and in June of 1998 chemical testing, including dissolved oxygen content, pH, alkalinity, turbidity, water hardness, measurement of phosphates, nitrates, chloride, and coliform counts began. The biannaul macro-invertebrate collection was completed in early October; the preserved specimens will be sorted and identified to the family level. Biannual physical parameter data has also been collected and will be compiled this winter.
