EPA Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC)

History of the CASAC

  • The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments established CASAC to review the technical bases for EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standards for criteria pollutants prior to the proposal and promulgation of those standards.

  • To fulfill that mandate, the CASAC has reviewed criteria documents, science assessments, and policy-related assessments developed by EPA.

  • CASAC also provides advice to EPA on a range of other scientific issues related to pollutants where members' expertise can strengthen the scientific bases of Agency programs.
