BACKGROUND.

The CASAC Ozone Review Panel will hold discussions concerning the 2008 Final Rule for the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for ozone and may offer unsolicited advice to the EPA Administrator on the final rule. EPA last revised the ozone NAAQS in July 1997.

Section 109(d)(1) of the Clean Air Act (CAA) requires that the Agency periodically review and revise, as appropriate, the air quality criteria and NAAQS for the six "criteria" air pollutants, including ambient ozone.

The CASAC Ozone Review Panel has provided advice to EPA during the current review cycle of the ozone NAAQS. The panel last met in March 2007 to review the Agency’s Final Ozone Staff Paper and to offer unsolicited advice to EPA on the chapters concerning the primary (human health-related) and secondary (welfare effects-related) ozone NAAQS. The CASAC sent a letter to the Administrator based on that review [EPA-CASAC-07-002].
