EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation’s Office of Radiation and Indoor Air (ORIA) requested SAB advice on the application of a 2006 National Research Council report Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation BEIR VII Phase 2 (BEIR VII), which primarily addresses cancer and genetic risks from low doses of low-linear-energy-transfer (low-LET) radiation. EPA asked for SAB review of an Agency draft White Paper: Modifying EPA Radiation Risk Models Based on BEIR VII, dated August, 2006. In the EPA draft White Paper EPA proposed changes to EPA's methodology for estimating radiogenic cancers, based on the contents of BEIR VII. The Agency expects to adopt the models and methodology recommended in BEIR VII, but believes that certain modifications and expansions are desirable or necessary for EPA's purposes.
