James R. Mihelcic
Dr. James R. Mihelcic is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of South Florida. He served several years as the Co-Director of the Sustainable Futures Institute and currently directs the Master’s International Program in Civil & Environmental Engineering. This program allows students to combine a research-based graduate degree in civil or environmental engineering with service in the U.S. Peace Corps as a water/sanitation engineer. The emphasis of his research is on biological processes applied to natural and engineered systems, green engineering and sustainability, water scarcity and its impact on human health, and water/sanitation/hygiene issues of the developing world. Dr. Mihelcic was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) and has also served as AEESP President (2007-2008). His accomplishments in research and education have been acknowledged by several awards from AEESP. Dr. Mihelcic is a former American Association for the Advancement of Science-U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Science and Engineering Fellow where he worked in the Office of Underground Storage Tanks. He led several research and education sustainability initiatives including development of a new “Graduate Certificate in Sustainability” and an “Undergraduate Certificate in International Sustainable Development Engineering”. Dr. Mihelcic has written one textbook (Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.) and has been leading two additional textbook projects. The first is titled Water Supply, Sanitation Systems, and Indoor Air Quality: Field Guide in Engineering for Development Workers (ASCE Press, 2009). The second is titled Environmental Engineering: Fundamentals, Sustainability, & Design (John Wiley, 2008).
