Larry Claxton, Phd

Dr. Larry Claxton has a B.S. in chemistry from Middle Tennessee State University, a M.S. in mammalian physiology from Memphis State University, and a Ph.D. in genetics and public health administration from North Carolina State University. He has 34 years of experience as a genetic toxicologist with the U.S. government - first at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and now at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Before returning to active research, Dr. Claxton was Director of the Environmental Carcinogenesis Division of the National Health and Ecological Effects Research Laboratory.

His research has concentrated upon developing bioassay methods for evaluating complex environmental mixtures, identifying environmental mutagens and carcinogens, and developing new research approaches for hazard and risk assessment. He has served on committees for several international organizations (including World Health Organization and ICPEMC) and EPA's - Risk Assessment Forum, been an officer in several national societies, co-authored one book, co-edited five books, and been an author on over 150 peer reviewed scientific articles. In addition to three EPA Bronze Medals, Dr. Claxton has received seven EPA Scientific and Technical Achievement Awards (STAA) for his scientific publications. In 2006, he received a Level 1 STAA award - the highest the Agency offers. He recently received the prestigious Alexander Hollander Award from the Environmental Mutagen Society in recognition of outstanding contributions in the application of the principles and techniques of environmental mutagenesis to the protection of human health.

Note: There is no charge for a speaker. Travel is limited to (~50 miles) out of the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) area. All travel is up to the discretion of the speaker. Please submit requests at least 4 weeks in advance. Please limit requests to no more than two speakers per event.
