Chon Shoaf, Phd


Dr. Chon Shoaf received his undergraduate degree with a double major in chemistry and zoology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1970 and his PhD in biochemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1980. After post-doctoral study in toxicology at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (1982-1984) and serving as a research associate at Duke University (1984-1988), Dr. Shoaf conducted risk assessments on hazardous waste sites until 1990. He joined the US EPA as the Branch Chief for the Hazardous Pollutant Assessment Branch of the National Center for Environmental Assessment in 1990 and became an Assistant Center Director (ACD) in 1995. His focus as ACD was research and budget planning for criteria air pollutants and air toxics in the Office of Research and Development. He was the lead author on the Air Toxics Multi-Year Plan and Air Toxics Research Strategy. In 2004 he became the Acting Deputy Director of the RTP Division of the National Center for Environmental Assessment. His expertise is in the field of risk assessment, dose-response assessment, and air toxics.
