Joseph Wood started working for EPA in 1991 in the Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, Emission Standards Division, as an air pollution engineer. In ESD he worked on the development of technology-based national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants. In 2003 he worked one year in EPA's Office of Research and Development in the Air Pollution Technology Branch, mostly in the laboratory, on homeland security and combustion related research projects. Joseph began working as a research engineer for US EPA's National Homeland Security Research Center in 2004. There he works on projects related to the development of technology for decontamination and disposal of materials contaminated with biological and chemical agents. He is a Professional Engineer, and is currently chair of the Air and Waste Management Association, Research Triangle Park chapter. He obtained his Masters degree in environmental engineering (air pollution process engineering emphasis) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. After he obtained his Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (environmental emphasis) in 1985, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador for 2 years, designing and building water and sewer systems for small communities, and installing hand pumps for community wells.
