+ Feedback | Caņon City advocacy group wins national award for excellence
Denver -- The Environmental Protection Agency today announced its prestigious 2004 Citizen Excellence in Community Involvement Award will be awarded to the Caņon City-based advocacy group, Colorado Citizens Against ToxicWaste. CCAT is recognized for its leadership and participation in the community involvement process at the Lincoln Park Study Area Superfund site.
“Citizens and community groups play a critical role within the Superfund cleanup process,” said Max Dodson, Assistant Regional Administrator at EPA’s regional headquarters in Denver. “Presenting a national award is a great opportunity to congratulate and recognize the active participation and accomplishments of these dedicated people.”
CCAT, led by co-chairs Jeri Fry and Sharyn Cunningham of Caņon City, holds regularly scheduled public meetings in Fremont County, maintains an informative Web site, sponsors candidate forums during election cycles, publishes educational fliers, keeps elected and regulatory authorities informed of pertinent developments regarding hazardous waste in Colorado and skillfully engages citizens in constructive discussions.
As a direct result of CCAT’s pressure, two new Colorado laws were passed that will effectively ensure public participation in the licensing process of facilities intending to bring hazardous waste into Colorado.
The award will be presented to CCAT Thursday, June 17, during EPA’s national Community Involvement Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Denver.
