The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is soliciting public comment on a proposed Corrective Action Plan (CAP) to cleanup petroleum contaminated soil and groundwater associated with a historic gasoline release from underground storage tanks (USTs) previously located at the Western Gas station at 401 S. Elm Street, in Toppenish, WA. Western Gas was also known as Kuki Mart, Brand X, and Toppenish Shell. The proposed cleanup action involves the drilling of borings on the property to inject fluids intended to treat and reduce the concentrations of gasoline range organic compounds in soil and groundwater. This treatment technology is referred to as in situ chemical oxidation and bioremediation. Groundwater monitoring would occur until it is determined that contaminant concentrations are below cleanup standards.
