The August 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act directed EPA to support the protection of all public drinking water sources. Building on previous wellhead protection programs, EPA is working with states, tribes and communities to develop the Source Water Assessment and Protection (SWAP) program. These programs address potential contamination of both surface and subsurface water sources.
