Triangle Park

Triangle Park is a 35-acre site located at 5828 North Van Houton Place, between the University of Portland and McCormick and Baxter. The site is located on the Willamette River between river mile 7 and 8 within the Portland Harbor Superfund Site. A variety of industrial uses since the early 1900’s left multiple contaminants in the soil and groundwater. The site has been idle since Triangle Park LLC acquired it in 1997. DEQ began site cleanup efforts in the late 1980’s.

The University of Portland is purchasing the Triangle Park property so that it can relocate and develop athletic facilities on the Triangle Park property, freeing up it's existing land on the bluff for buildings. The University plans to also develop a riverfront walkway to which the public will have access.

EPA is working with the University of Portland to conduct up to $3 million of clean up activities on the Triangle Park property. EPA is overseeing the investigation and eventual upland clean up so that it may provide the University with a Bona-Fide Prospective Purchaser Agreement and Order on Consent for Removal Action, an agreement that provides certain legal protections to the University as a purchaser.

The Agreement between EPA and the University also provides the University with the same legal protections in relation to the McCormick & Baxter property because the University has also expressed interest in purchasing that property in the future.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is entering into its own agreement with the University that provides similar protections under state law.
