Five Year Review - Five-Year Reviews generally are required by CERCLA or program policy when hazardous substances remain on site above levels which permit unrestricted use and unlimited exposure. Five-year reviews provide an opportunity to evaluate the implementation and performance of a remedy to determine whether it remains protective of human health and the environment. Read more about Five Year Reviews.

Record of Decision (ROD) - The Record of Decision (ROD) is a public document that explains which cleanup alternatives will be used to clean up a Superfund site. The ROD for sites listed on the NPL is created from information generated during the RI/FS.  Read more about Records of Decisions (RODs).

Proposed Plan - Information gathered in the RI/FS is used to develop a Proposed Plan, which describes the various cleanup options under consideration and identifies the option EPA prefers. EPA invited community members to a public meeting to express their views and to discuss the plan with EPA officials.

Feasibility Study - The Feasibility Study (FS) is the mechanism for the development, screening, and detailed evaluation of alternative remedial actions.

Remedial Investigation - After a site is listed on the NPL, a remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) is performed at the site. The remedial investigation serves as the mechanism for collecting data to:
  • characterize site conditions;
  • determine the nature of the waste;
  • assess risk to human health and the environment; and
  • conduct treatability testing to evaluate the potential performance and cost of the treatment technologies that are being considered.
  • Read more about RI/FS.

Human Health Risk Assessment - We study health risks based on what people do and are likely to do on the site. Our goal is to protect everyone who could come in contact with chemicals from the site especially children, women of childbearing age, the elderly, and others who may be at greatest risk. Read more about Risk Assessment.

Ecological Risk Assessment - An ecological risk assessment evaluates the potential adverse effects that the site contamination may have on the plants and animals that make up ecosystems. Read more about Ecological Risk Assessment.

Archives - Listing of any documents in the above categories that have been on the web but are out of date and give background on the decision process at this site.
