Hamilton-LaBree Roads Groundwater Contamination
Site Summary
The Hamilton/LaBree Roads Groundwater Contamination Superfund site is three miles southwest of the city of Chehalis in southwest Washington. A shallow aquifer under the site supplies drinking water to local residences and businesses, and is separated from the deep aquifer by about 100 feet of clay.
In 1993, the Washington State Department of Health tested drinking water wells in the area and found six wells near the intersection of Hamilton and LaBree Roads that were contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE). Tests revealed 63 buried drums containing PCE in the area. These were removed in summer 1999.
PCE has been found in soil and groundwater at Berwick Creek and near Hamilton and LaBree Roads, creating a plume of contaminated groundwater that is gradually moving in a northwest direction. PCE is suspected to cause cancer in people. It is a chemical commonly used in dry cleaning, metal degreasing, and other activities.
In 2000, the site was added to the Superfund National Priorities List of hazardous waste sites targeted for cleanup. In 2002, EPA and the City of Chehalis cooperated to install a new water line for people affected by contaminated ground water at the site. The water line provides clean, safe water for domestic use.
EPA is currently working on long-term cleanup plans for the site. During the summer and fall of 2007, EPA conducted additional groundwater and indoor air testing for PCE. The test results will help us decide the appropriate cleanup actions for the site.
