Site Summary
FMC facility after it closed and before buildings were demolished.

The Eastern Michaud Flats Superfund Site (aka Simplot or FMC), located northwest of Pocatello, Idaho, covers approximately 2,530 acres. Two adjacent phosphate ore processing facilities, the FMC Corporation and the J.R. Simplot Company Don Plant make up the superfund site. These processing facilities operated from the early 1940’s until the FMC facility closed in December of 2001. The Simplot Don Plant facility is still an active operating facility.

In 1998, the initial Superfund ROD was issued as was a RCRA Consent Decree for portions of the FMC facility. A Supplemental RI/FS is underway for the FMC portion while Simplot groundwater remediation is ongoing. Most recently, a Unilateral Order has been issued to FMC for a time critical removal action to control toxic gases emitting from a closed and capped RCRA hazardous waste disposal pond.
