Idaho Conjecture Mine

In June 2007, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Forest Service will begin a cleanup at the Conjecture Mine in Bonner County, Idaho. The former silver and lead mine is located about six miles south of the community of Lakeview, Idaho. The main contaminants at the site are arsenic, lead, and manganese.

The purposes of the cleanup are:
  • to reduce the likelihood of people accidentally swallowing or breathing soils and sediments contaminated with mine waste;
  • to reduce the movement downstream of contaminated soils and sediments; and
  • to create a clean stream corridor by rebuilding the stream bed and banks of Gold Creek disturbed by cleanup activities.

The cleanup continues a comprehensive, coordinated EPA and U.S. Forest Service approach to address contaminants from mining in the Gold Creek Watershed within the Pend Oreille Basin. In fall 2005, EPA and the Forest Service conducted a cleanup at the Idaho Lakeview Mine and Mill Site, in the adjacent Chloride Gulch Creek drainage.
