Description
On Sunday March 24, 2007 CT DEP responded to a NRC report of pools of mercury observed along a rural road in eastern CT. DEP excavated 80 ft of road shoulder while under the presumption that the pooling was a result of a surface spill. During the excavation mercury droplets were observed emanating from under the asphalt road way. Monitoring also detected mercury at the water bank interface of an adjacent intermittent stream which flows into the Five Mile River. On Tuesday, March 27, CT DEP requested EPA assistance in identifying and removing the mercury.
On Wednsday OSC Wainberg and START mobilized to the site. Lumex screening was conducted at three nearby residents and no mercury levels were detected.
On Thursday OSC Wainberg, START, ERRS, and the Region One Mobile Command Post depolyed to the site to transition command of the scene from the CT DEP and to initiate an extent of contamination survey.
