In 1997, the city of New Bedford received funding from EPA Brownfields Assessment Pilot for $200,000 to conduct further assessment of the site as if the site was divided into three parcels (north, central, and south parcel) so the parcels could be assessed individually. In October 2001, the city was also awarded as a Showcase Community and received another $200,000 to complete this assessment. Since then, the city of New Bedford has subdivided the property into three parcels. For the north parcel, a business (gym) that is located on the north side of the property bought the property. The gym business has redeveloped the parcel into a parking lot (to help expand the gym's business). For the central parcel, the city's redevelopment authority went into an agreement with a local business, a speciality produce company, to redevelop the parcel. The redevelopment authority agreed to cleanup the site (there is about 9,000 cubic yards of wood debris mixed in the soil on both the north and central parcels) and the business agreed to redevelop the site. The redevelopment authority is working with the MA DEP to allow the city to dispose of the wood debris waste in one of the city's dump sites. Once that process is complete, the redevelopment authority will start excavating the site (in Sept. 2003) and the speciality produce company will redevelop the site (by summer 2004.) For the south parcel, there were 4 underground storage tanks located on the parcel and they were removed my MA DEP in March 2003. The city is now ready to market this parcel for businesses.
