Description

The former Ensign - Bickford Company located in Simsbury, CT, has been manufacturing explosive products at the 900 acre site since 1836. In 1997, EPA began working with Ensign-Bickford on a voluntary basis to conduct a RCRA Facility Investigation (RFI) and cleanup activities. In May 2003, the facility was transferred to Dyno Nobel, Inc, and the Facility entered into a consent order with CTDEEP to conduct investigation and cleanup under the CTDEEP Property Transfer Program. Wastes generated at the facility have included waste explosives and pyrotechnics, which were burned or detonated at the site. Ensign-Bickford, and now Dyno Nobel have conducted numerous investigations and remedial interim measures to reduce risks at the site. The site has achieved the two Environmental Indicators, Current Human Exposures Under Control and Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control. The facility continues to conduct site investigations, interim cleanup activities, and is preparing a risk assessment.

Current Status
