On the afternoon of 09/06/07, workers clearing trash from the riverbank near the BU bridge picked up a "brick" (8"x3"x1")of soduim. The brick was placed in a boat with other trash and ignited in the bottom of the boat when it contacted water. (Sodium is water reactive). Several workers were injured. The fire burned out when the water was consumed. The brick was left in the boat overnight on the River.

The morning of 9/7/07, the District Haz Mat Team, Boston Fire, and a cleanup crew hired by the RP (Boston Duck Boats)reconvened. Oil resin coated the floor of the boat to neutralize any remaining sodium. The boat and was then decontaminated and cleaned. EPA responded to the scene and MassDEP was also at the scene overseeing the response. No additional federal assistance was requested.
