Description
The twelve acre Waterbury Rolling Mills (WRM) facility produces copper alloy strip which is used for the manufacture of circuit boards and electrical connectors. As a result of these processes WRM generates metal hydroxide sludge which was disposed on-site in an unlined surface impoundment. While removal of sludge and capping of the unlined surface impoundment has been conducted on December 23, 2003 the CT DEP notified WRM of their responsibility to investigate and remediate releases of hazardous waste or hazardous substances at or from their facility. The CT DEP required that this work be conducted in accordance with the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, Section 22a-449(c)-105(h) and must include a schedule for removal of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) emanating from their property. Furthermore, the CT DEP acknowledged that a Licensed Environmental Professional may be used to verify the performance of investigative and remedial work that must be completed.

Current Status
WRM continues to work with the CT DEP on controlling any further migration of LNAPL contamination in GW; significant accomplishments are anticipated for 2006.
