Current Status
A collaboration among federal, state, and local governments, including the use of Lowell’s Brownfields Assessment Demonstration pilot funding, helped redevelop two sites into beautiful new sports facilities. The first, a new 7,800 seat arena for concerts and sporting events, named for U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas, began operating in January 1998. The second, a 4,700-seat ballpark, named for retired State Representative Edward A. LeLacheur, opened in June 1998. In 2005, the city received EPA approval to begin site investigations at the Jackson-Appleton-Middlesex (JAM) garage site.
